What is your idea about?

In Sub-Saharan Africa, up to 50 % of harvests are lost due to a lack of efficient drying and storage solutions. This reduces income and limits access to international markets. Save The Grain focuses on sustainable technologies and fair trade structures to reduce harvest losses, strengthen local value creation, and empower women in agriculture.

How did you get together as a team?

Our team grew out of a circle of friends. Robin and Marvin already knew each other from living together in a shared apartment, while Lenia met the two through studying with another roommate. Through our shared interest in sustainable solutions for societal problems, we came together and now combine our knowledge and experience to work on Save The Grain.

How did you come up with your idea?

The idea for Save The Grain came from the student initiative Enactus Köln e.V. Togolese Komi Amavi drew our attention to the problem of massive harvest losses in his home country. As a student team, we researched solutions and developed the concept of Solar Dryers. We have already tested this technology in Togo, Guinea-Bissau, and Senegal, aiming to reduce harvest losses sustainably and strengthen local value creation.

What are you studying/working or what have you studied?

Lenia studied Social Sciences at the University of Cologne and brings a deep understanding of societal contexts and sustainable development.

Marvin studied Mechanical Engineering at the Technical University after completing an apprenticeship and applies his technical expertise to develop efficient solutions.

Robin also completed an apprenticeship before studying Business Psychology at the Rheinische Hochschule. His expertise lies at the intersection of economic processes and network building – he is our networker, forging valuable partnerships and strategic connections.

Together, we combine technical, economic, and social knowledge to create sustainable solutions for agriculture.

Reduce harvest losses - strengthen economic prospects

To efficiently dry and preserve harvests, we rely on sustainable technologies developed and adapted in collaboration with local partners. This reduces harvest losses and strengthens economic opportunities on the ground. Through our brand Femmepact, we support women in agriculture in processing and marketing their products fairly. In addition to expanding local structures, we are creating new distribution channels in Germany to make their products internationally visible. This leads to more stable incomes and greater economic independence. Our approach is based on collaboration and long-term exchange to develop resilient and sustainable solutions for local agriculture together.

How has Gateway helped you?

The Gateway has greatly supported us with its expertise on our journey. We are currently participating in the accelerator program, which helps us through hands-on workshops on various topics. The regular events are especially valuable as they allow us to expand our network and connect with other startups. Additionally, we were able to win prize money, which enables us to equip ourselves technically and further develop our products.
